This academic year we launched an initiative with the 1st and 2nd year BTECH students at City and Islington College in Holloway on a new zero waste fashion assignment. We were inspired in this idea by the work of Zero Waste Daniel, and his pioneering line of genderless clothing and accessories that rescues surplus textiles from landfill. We wanted to inspire the students to contribute to change and sustainable practice in the fashion industry, with the aim of ending the cycle of waste and understanding the value of using what we already have.
Menage Modern Vintage donated some surplus second hand and vintage stock, including a box of pristine Savile Row shirts. The students were given a brief intended to simulate working practices that take place in a design studio.
Working to the theme of ‘Deconstruction/Reconstruction’ and with reference to the work of Margiela, Stella McCartney and Zero Waste Daniel, they were each given 2 garments to deconstruct, redesign and remake into new unique pieces.

The final outcomes of the assignment were styled and modelled by the students and photographed in the studio by photographer Isla Mathieson, who kindly gave her time and enthusiasm to the project. It was a real delight to see the imaginative and inspired results, including a mini skirt and jacket suit made from an old school blazer that had once belonged to my son. A highlight was an old Horrockses dress which was remodelled using ruffled Sainsbury carrier bags.

Thank you to all the students for their work, also to Sharon Carlin at Candi, and Isla Mathieson for the photos.
