A ravishing and absolutely unique evening gown by Sybil Connolly, 1960s vintage, featuring a zillion tiny horizontal pleats of ultra fine ruby red Irish linen.
Working directly with the cloth, without preliminary drawings, the Dublin based designer specialised in reimagining and glamorising traditional fabrics, making her half a century ahead of her time. She attracted high profile aficionados including Jackie Kennedy with her signature fabrics made from ultra-fine, sheer pleated handkerchief linen; it took up to nine yards of material to create one yard of the uncrushable pleated fabric. It could be packed away and ‘emerge unscathed’, according to Connolly. The effect is divine, of incredible lightness and grace.
This dress, called "Christmas Holiday", has a boat neckline edged in burgundy faille. Fitted bodice with elbow length sleeves. The full skirt is ankle length and inset with a horizontal faille band.
Beautifully hand finished on the interior, with typed bolduc or tape bearing the model name and size 8. Back zip, fully lined in pink silk.
