An iconic yellow silk oversized T-shirt by Katharine Hamnett with the slogan STAY ALIVE IN 85 printed in large block capitals on the front and back.
This T-shirt is an important example of popular designer fashion in the 1980s, and appears in the collections of several museums around the world. This particular slogan was inspired by Hamnett’s interest in and support for women’s anti-nuclear protests at Greenham Common airbase in the UK.
We are excited to offer this piece for sale to coincide with the exhibition T-SHIRT: CULT - CULTURE - SUBVERSION at the Museum of Fashion and Textiles from February 2018.
Katharine Hamnett, in protest slogan T-shirt, meets Margaret Thatcher at Downing Street in 1984
The T-shirt also appears in the permanent collections of museums including the V&A in London, MAAS in Sydney, and the NGV in Melbourne.
The design was worn by actor Sarah Jessica-Parker’s character Carrie in a scene in the ‘Sex and the City’ (2008) movie.
