An exceptionally beautiful vintage tribal dress, possibly a wedding dress from one of the nomadic tribes of Afghanistan; from the archive of film costume designer Annie Symons.
This handmade dress is of exquisite craftsmanship, made of fine black cotton, lined in the bodice with lovely patterned fabric. The yoke, sleeves and skirt are encrusted with colourful geometric embroidery in different patterns, and further embellished with coins (dated late 1980s - early 1990s), pearl buttons, brass beads, and other metal ornamentation.
It has a slash neck and long wide sleeves and hangs loosely down to the knee, flaring out by means of a number of overstitched godet panels.
