Sybil Connolly Vintage Evening Skirt in Sheer Black Linen, UK6-8

Sybil Connolly Vintage Evening Skirt in Sheer Black Linen, UK6-8

Regular price £600.00 Sale

An incredible 1960s vintage long evening skirt, a piece of fashion history no less, in sheer black pleated linen by 1950s Irish designer Sybil Connolly.

Working directly with the cloth, without preliminary drawings, she specialised in reimagining and glamorizing traditional fabrics – one dress was made out of Irish linen tea towels, making her half a century ahead of her time.  She attracted high profile aficionados with her signature fabrics made from ultra-fine, sheer pleated handkerchief linen; it took up to nine yards of Irish linen handkerchiefs to create one yard of the uncrushable pleated fabric. The effect is divine.   Jackie Kennedy wore an almost identical skirt in this White House portrait by Aaron Shikler.

This skirt is A line, floor length, featuring a zillion tiny pleats although the skirt retains an incredible lightness and grace.  There is a deep godet pleat running down each side from the waist, held partially closed by beautiful flat black bows.

It has a deep waistband fastened with hooks and eyes.  The underskirt is a work of art in itself, flat across the waist and hips and then gathered and frilled  to maintain the wonderful silhouette.
